Summer Math Loss: A Grade-by-Grade Catch-Up Checklist

The research is annoyingly consistent: kids lose more math than reading over summer — typically one to three months of it — because nobody bedtime-reads multiplication tables. The good news: the rust comes off far faster than the skill went on. Here’s what to polish before each grade, and a plan that survives real family life.

First, the reassuring part

Summer loss is rust, not erosion. The skill is still in there; it’s the retrieval that’s gone stiff. Most kids recover their spring level within a few weeks of light practice — the problem is only when the first weeks of school (and the first assessment) arrive before the rust comes off, the child concludes “I’m bad at math,” and confidence does the real damage. The entire job of August is beating that first assessment to the punch.

What to refresh, grade by grade

Each checklist below is what the coming grade assumes your child still has from the last one. Ten focused minutes a day on these, starting 2–3 weeks before school, is genuinely enough.

Entering 1st grade

Counting to 100 without the wobble at 29/39/49 • counting on from a number (“start at 6, keep going”) • recognizing groups up to 5 without counting • addition and subtraction stories within 10 with objects. Keep it physical — snacks, LEGO, stairs.

Entering 2nd grade

Addition facts within 20 (the big one — 2nd grade assumes these are getting automatic) • subtraction within 20 as “think addition” • place value: 47 = 4 tens 7 ones • counting by 2s, 5s, 10s. Our free Grade 1 worksheet packs target exactly these.

Entering 3rd grade

Two-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping (the skill that rusts hardest all summer) • place value to 1,000 • skip counting by 3s and 4s — it’s the on-ramp to the year of times tables. The Grade 2 packs cover the regrouping reps; the place value chart handles the rest.

Entering 4th grade

Multiplication facts 2–9 — this is non-negotiable; 4th grade multiplies multi-digit numbers and introduces serious fractions, and a child still finger-counting 7×8 drowns in both • division as the reverse • basic fraction meaning (3/4 = 3 pieces of a 4-piece whole). Print the multiplication chart, run the Grade 3 fact sheets, and if facts are shaky, prioritize them over everything else on this page.

Entering 5th grade

Multi-digit multiplication • long division steps • equivalent fractions and adding fractions with like denominators — because 5th grade goes straight to unlike denominators and decimals. The Grade 4 packs plus one week of fraction review covers the waterfront.

The 10-minute plan that actually happens

Forget the summer workbook that dies by July 3rd. The version that survives: one short practice, same time daily, attached to an existing habit — after breakfast, before screens. One worksheet or one game session, not both, not longer. Ten minutes of retrieval practice daily beats a Saturday hour, because rust removal is about frequency, not duration. And keep the tone boring-cheerful: this is teeth-brushing, not a test.

When it’s more than rust

If two weeks of daily practice moves nothing — if last year’s “mastered” skills seem genuinely absent rather than stiff — you may be looking at a gap that predates summer.
