Dividing decimals is the topic with the scariest reputation and the friendliest secret: you never actually divide by a decimal. Ever. One legal move turns every decimal division into a whole-number problem your child already knows how to do — and the move takes one sentence to teach.
The one move: shift both numbers together
7.2 ÷ 0.9, start to finish
1. Look at the divisor (the number you’re dividing by): 0.9 has one decimal place.
2. Shift both numbers one place right — multiply both by 10: 7.2 ÷ 0.9 becomes 72 ÷ 9.
3. Divide normally: 72 ÷ 9 = 8. That’s the answer — no point-placing needed.
Why is that legal? Because a division is a fraction, and you’re allowed to multiply top and bottom by the same number — the same equivalent-fractions rule from grade 3, promoted to decimals. 7.2/0.9 and 72/9 are the same amount wearing different outfits.

Try 1.5 ÷ 0.25 (both shift two places: 150 ÷ 25 = 6) — and then 3 ÷ 0.5 for the answer that startles every kid: 6, bigger than what you started with. “How many halves fit in 3?” Six of them. Dividing by something under 1 asks how many small pieces fit — so the answer grows.
When the dividend keeps a decimal
The shift is sized by the divisor only. For 8.46 ÷ 0.2, shift one place: 84.6 ÷ 2. Now it’s ordinary long division with a decimal point in the dividend — divide as usual and bring the point straight up: 42.3. Two skills your child already has, stacked.
The cases that come home
- Money: $7.50 split 3 ways is 7.50 ÷ 3 — whole-number divisor, so no shift at all; just divide and carry the point up: $2.50.
- “How many 0.25s in 3?” — quarters in three dollars: 300 ÷ 25 = 12. The measurement meaning of division, made physical.

The three mistakes to skip
- Shifting only one number. The move is legal because both shift together. One-sided shifts change the problem — it’s the equivalent-fractions rule, and it needs both floors of the fraction.
- Sizing the shift by the dividend. The divisor decides. Clear the decimal from the number you’re dividing by; the dividend lands wherever it lands.
- Panicking at a bigger answer. 3 ÷ 0.5 = 6 is right. Estimate with the meaning — “how many halves in 3?” — before trusting the reflex that division always shrinks.
