How to Multiply Decimals: Step-by-Step (+ Worksheet & Calculator)

Fifth grade, October-ish, the homework says 3.4 × 2.6 and your child has frozen — or worse, lined up the decimal points like it’s addition and gotten something wildly wrong. Multiplying decimals has exactly one trick, it takes ninety seconds to learn, and unlike most tricks, this one makes more sense the closer you look at it.

The whole method in three steps

3.4 × 2.6, start to finish

1. Ignore the decimal points. Multiply as whole numbers: 34 × 26 = 884.
2. Count decimal places in the problem: 3.4 has one, 2.6 has one — two total.
3. Place the point that many places from the right: 884 → 8.84.

That’s it. Do not line up decimal points — that’s an addition rule, and it’s the single most common mix-up on this topic. Multiplication only cares about the count of decimal places, never their alignment.

Try your child’s actual homework numbers — and then try 0.5 × 0.5 for the moment every kid distrusts: the answer, 0.25, is smaller than either number. Half of a half is a quarter. Multiplying by something less than 1 shrinks — the tool makes that visible, and it’s the deepest idea on this page.

Why counting places works

The trick is place value in disguise. 3.4 is really 34 ÷ 10, and 2.6 is 26 ÷ 10. So 3.4 × 2.6 = (34 × 26) ÷ 100 — multiply the whole numbers, then slide the result two steps down the ×10 staircase. “Count the decimal places” is just counting how many tens you divided by. Show your child that once and the rule stops being magic.

The shortcut: multiplying by 10, 100, or 1,000

There's one case where you don't need the whole method at all — multiplying a decimal by a power of ten. When you multiply by 10, 100, or 1,000, you just slide the decimal point to the right, one place for each zero:

This is the same place-value staircase as above, just climbing up instead of down — and it's worth drilling on its own, because it turns up constantly in money (dimes and dollars), the metric system, and reading big numbers. It's also the exact reverse of what happens when you divide decimals by ten.

How do you multiply decimals step by step?

Ignore the decimal points and multiply as whole numbers; count the total decimal places in both factors; place the point that many places from the right. For 3.4 × 2.6: 34 × 26 = 884, two places total, so 8.84.

Do you line up the decimal points when multiplying?

No — lining up points is the rule for addition and subtraction. Multiplication only uses the count of decimal places, and mixing the two rules up is the most common decimal mistake in grade 5.

Why do you count decimal places when multiplying?

Because each decimal place means the number was divided by ten. 3.4 × 2.6 is really (34 × 26) ÷ 100, so the answer needs two decimal places to account for those two tens — it’s place value, not magic.

Why is the answer smaller when multiplying decimals less than 1?

Multiplying by a number under 1 takes a fraction of something: 0.5 × 0.5 asks for half of a half, which is 0.25. “Multiplying makes bigger” is only true when both factors are greater than 1.

What grade do kids learn to multiply decimals?
