Somewhere around day four, the backpack stops coming home empty. A warm-up sheet with a few red marks. A “review of last year” page that did not go great. And somewhere in the next few weeks — screeners usually run a little later than the first backpack papers — a score from something with a name like FAST (that’s Florida’s), i-Ready, or STAR. Whenever it arrives, a small knot forms in your stomach: is my kid behind already?
Take a breath. I’m a parent of two and I build a math practice game for a living — which means between my own kids’ backpacks and the eleven-thousand-plus practice questions I’ve written against these exact grade-level skills, I’ve spent a lot of time with what these first papers actually test. The first papers of the year are the most misread documents in elementary school. Here’s what they actually say.
What those first papers are actually for
Teachers are not grading your child in week one and two — they’re mapping them. As we covered in our first-week guide, the opening days are quiet reconnaissance: routines, review, and finding out where eight months of summer left everyone. The papers coming home now are the output of that reconnaissance. A rough score doesn’t go in a gradebook that matters; it goes in the teacher’s mental map of who needs a refresher on regrouping before the new material starts.

Rust vs. gaps: the only distinction that matters
Every rough first paper is one of two things, and they need opposite responses:
- Rust is a skill your child owned in May that’s gone quiet over the summer. It looks like slow fact recall, silly slips, “wait, I know this” faces. Rust polishes off in one to three weeks of light practice — our summer math loss checklist maps exactly which skills rust fastest at each grade.
- A gap is a skill that never fully landed last year. It looks like blank stares at a problem type, not just slow answers — the child who can’t start, rather than the child who starts slowly. Gaps don’t polish off; they need the underlying idea rebuilt, gently, before this year’s material stacks on top. The test at the kitchen table: pick one missed problem and ask, “walk me through what you tried.” A rusty kid gets partway and self-corrects. A kid with a gap doesn’t know where the on-ramp is. Ten minutes of listening beats an hour of drilling.
What the first papers look like, grade by grade
Use this to decode what came home — and the one question that tells you whether it’s rust or a gap.

Notice the pattern: every question asks for the how, not just the answer. A child who can explain is rusty at worst. If a diagnostic score came home
Here in Florida the big one is FAST — the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking, the state’s progress-monitoring test. The first round (PM1) for grades 3 and up typically runs from early September into October, so if week two has passed and no official score has come home, that’s why — it’s coming. For grades 1–2 the early screener is usually STAR, which can start as soon as late August; districts sometimes layer on i-Ready on their own schedules. Whichever arrives, they all produce numbers that look alarmingly precise — percentiles, grade-level equivalents, color bands. Three things to know before you react:
- It’s a placement photo, not a verdict. These tests exist so instruction can start in the right place. Teachers expect early-fall scores to sit below last spring’s — the whole class took the same summer.
- One sitting, one mood. A seven-year-old’s score moves with breakfast, sleep, and whether the test was on a screen they’d never seen. The system knows it, too: FAST runs three rounds a year (PM1 now, PM2 midwinter, PM3 in spring) precisely because growth — not one sitting — is the story.
- The subscores matter more than the number. “Below level in Numbers & Operations” is actionable. “42nd percentile” is not. If the report has domain breakdowns, that’s the part worth reading twice.
The calm 10-minute plan for weeks two and three
Ten minutes a night. That’s the whole plan.
Minutes 1–2: one problem from whatever came home — “walk me through it.” Listening, not fixing.
Minutes 3–8: practice the one skill that wobbled — a page from our free printable worksheets, flashcards in the car, or a MathKnights quest if screens are earned.
Minutes 9–10: one win out loud. “Yesterday that took you a minute; today it took twenty seconds.” Confidence compounds faster than skills do.
Ten focused minutes beats a weekend grind for the same reason week one beats a cram: young brains consolidate small doses. And if the wobble doesn’t budge after two weeks of this, that’s your signal to email the teacher — not with worry, but with data: “we’ve practiced subtraction with regrouping nightly for two weeks and it’s still hard — what are you seeing in class?” Teachers answer that email differently than “is my child behind?”
The three mistakes to skip this month
- The September boot camp. An hour of drilling on day five teaches one lesson: math is punishment for a bad paper. Ten minutes, gently, wins the year.
- Comparing papers with other parents. The group-chat “what did yours get?” spiral measures nothing — different classes review different things in different orders.
- Waiting for conferences. If something genuinely worries you, week three beats week ten. Early emails get early answers, and early gaps are small gaps.
Frequently asked questions
My child did badly on the beginning-of-year math assessment. Should I worry?
Not from one beginning-of-year score. These screeners measure where a child is starting after summer, and teachers expect early-fall results below spring levels. Watch the trend instead: if the mid-year check hasn’t moved, that’s a real conversation. A low first score plus steady ten-minute practice is the most common “caught up by winter” story in elementary school.
How do I know if it’s summer rust or a real gap?
Ask your child to walk you through one missed problem. Rust self-corrects partway through (“oh wait — I forgot to carry”); a gap can’t find the starting point. Rust responds to one to three weeks of light practice; a gap needs the underlying concept rebuilt, and it’s worth telling the teacher what you’re seeing.
Should I tell my child their diagnostic score?
It depends on the child more than a rule. For the youngest (grades 1–2), numbers tend to become identities, so sharing the plan usually beats sharing the score. By grade 3, plenty of kids can handle it — if it’s framed as a starting number in a three-round year (“this is your September score — let’s see what winter says”) rather than a grade on who they are. The real test is your kid: if numbers motivate them, use it; if numbers curdle into “I’m bad at math,” skip the score and keep the plan.
When should I contact the teacher about a rough start?
After about two weeks of consistent practice with no movement — roughly week three or four. Come with what you’ve observed rather than a general worry: the specific skill, what you’ve tried, and what happens when your child attempts it. That email gets a specific, useful reply.
How much math practice should we do at home in the first month?
Ten minutes a night, most nights. Consistency beats volume for elementary math — small daily doses consolidate; weekend marathons evaporate. If it ends in tears, stop earlier: five good minutes beat fifteen fraught ones.
