How to help a first grader who's behind in math

“Behind” isn’t a verdict — it’s a gap, and gaps have an address. Here’s how to find the exact spot your child is stuck, and close it at home without the tears.

If a teacher’s note, a worksheet, or a quiet worry at the kitchen table has you Googling this at 10pm — first, breathe. A six-year-old who is “behind in math” is almost never a child who can’t do math. They’re a child who is missing one specific brick near the bottom of the wall, and everything built on top of it wobbles because of it. Find the cracked brick, and the wobble usually stops faster than you’d believe.

This guide is the thing I wish someone had handed me the first time one of mine came home flustered by numbers. It’s not a curriculum and it’s not a lecture. It’s how to figure out where your child is actually stuck, why the usual “just practice more” advice so often backfires, and the small, cheap, daily things that genuinely move a first grader forward.

First, what “behind” actually means in first grade

Here’s the part nobody says out loud: first grade is where math turns abstract for the very first time. In kindergarten, math is mostly counting things you can touch. In first grade, we start asking children to hold numbers in their heads, to see that 7 means a quantity and not just a squiggle, and to trust that 8 + 5 can be worked out rather than counted one finger at a time. That’s a genuine leap, and children make it at wildly different times — a spring birthday, a wobbly kindergarten year, a stretch of illness, or simply a brain that needed three more months. None of those are “behind” in any permanent sense.

“Behind” is also rarely about all of math. First-grade math isn’t one thing; it’s four separate strands, and a child can be perfectly fine in one and lost in another. Knowing which strand is the problem is 90% of the work.

The four foundations of first-grade math

But the strands above are universal — every first grade, every state, teaches the same foundations.

Nine times out of ten, a “behind” first grader has a number-sense gap — and every wobble above it traces back down to that.

Find the cracked brick: a ten-minute kitchen-table check

Before you fix anything, find where the wall cracks. You don’t need materials or a plan — a handful of beans, buttons, or cereal, a calm five minutes, and a warm tone. Walk down these steps in order and stop the moment your child hesitates, counts on their fingers with real effort, or says “I don’t know.” That spot — not the worksheet’s spot — is where you start.

The five-minute find-the-gap check

  1. Count objects. Put out 12 beans. “How many?” Watch whether they touch each one once and land on the right number. (One-to-one counting.)
  2. Count on. “Start at 6 and keep going.” Can they say 7, 8, 9… without restarting at one? Counting on is the hinge skill of first grade.
  3. See a small group. Flash four fingers for a second. “How many?” Instant answer = good. Counting them one by one = a number-sense gap worth noting.
  4. Add within ten.4 + 3?” Fingers are fine. You’re watching for a strategy, not speed.
  5. Add within twenty.8 + 5?” Do they count all thirteen from one, or count on from eight? The difference tells you everything.
  6. Tens and ones. “Show me 23 with these beans.” Do they make two groups of ten and three extra, or count out 23 singles? Grouping = place value is landing.

Wherever they first stumble, that’s your starting line. And here is the single most important sentence in this whole guide:

Go back to the last thing your child can do easily, and build up from there.

If 8 + 5 falls apart, don’t drill 8 + 5. Drop to within ten. If that’s shaky, drop to counting on. If that’s shaky, drop to counting objects reliably. Confidence — and real learning — grow from the place a child can already succeed. Hammering away at the exact spot they’re failing just teaches them, over and over, that math is where they fail.

The mistakes that tell you what’s really going on

A wrong answer is a message, not a verdict. Most first-grade “mistakes” are a child using an earlier, sensible strategy in a place it no longer fits — which means the fix is usually specific and quick once you can read it.

Counting all instead of counting on. Asked 8 + 5, they count “1, 2, 3…” all the way to 13 every time. Nothing is wrong with their arithmetic — they just haven’t met the idea that you can start at 8 and count on five more. That one idea, practiced for a week, speeds up everything.
Numbers won’t stick in their head. They can count beans but lose the number the instant it’s not in front of them. This is a working-memory-and-number-sense gap, and it’s why a number line and a hundreds chart help so much — they give the number a place to live so it’s not floating in the air.
Writing numbers backward, or 61 for 16. At six, reversed digits are developmentally normal and usually fade on their own. But 61-for-16 can also mean the teens haven’t clicked (that we say “sixteen” but write the 1 first is genuinely confusing). Tens-and-ones with real objects sorts it out.
Fingers for everything, even 2 + 1. Not a problem in itself — fingers are a first grader’s number line. It only signals a gap if it never speeds up over months. Don’t ban the fingers; build the number sense underneath, and the fingers retire themselves.

What actually closes the gap at home

Once you know the cracked brick, closing it is less about clever methods and more about a few unglamorous truths, done consistently.

Short and daily beats long and occasional

Ten friendly minutes a day will do more for a struggling six-year-old than a forty-five-minute Saturday session that ends in tears. A frustrated first grader has a short runway before they shut down, and once they’ve shut down, nothing more goes in. Little and often, always.

Concrete before abstract — always

First graders need to touch math before they can do it on paper. Count real things: beans, LEGO, grapes, steps up the stairs. Let them use fingers freely — it is a legitimate strategy, not cheating. Symbols like 7 − 3 mean nothing until the quantity is real in their hands first. Money is a wonderful free manipulative: pennies are ones, dimes are tens, and suddenly place value is something you can stack.

Make it a game, not a drill

“How many steps to the car?” “You set the table — how many forks do we need?” “I’ll hide some beans; how many did I take?” A child who is playing with numbers isn’t bracing for failure, and a brain that isn’t bracing actually learns. Here is the truth that outweighs every method: by first grade, children have already started deciding whether they are “a math person.” A six-year-old who has quietly concluded they’re bad at math will resist any approach, because every session confirms the story. Protecting how your child feels about math isn’t separate from closing the gap — it’s most of the job.

So: keep it light. Celebrate the effort and the strategy, not just the right answer (“I love how you counted on from the bigger number”). Never let it become a battle — the moment it turns into a standoff, stop and try again tomorrow; you’ll lose more to ten minutes of tears than you’ll gain from finishing the page. When it might be more than a gap

Most “behind” is an ordinary foundation gap that fills in with patient, consistent practice — genuinely, most of it. But it’s worth knowing the signs that deserve a professional eye, because catching a real learning difference early is a gift, not a diagnosis to fear.

Mention it to your child’s teacher or pediatrician if, despite weeks of calm, consistent practice, numbers simply won’t stick: trouble recognizing small quantities without counting, real difficulty remembering the order of numbers, or a persistent disconnect between a numeral and the amount it stands for. Dyscalculia and related differences tend to show up early and respond well to support — the earlier the better. This isn’t about panicking over a rough month; it’s about noticing when the struggle is deep, resistant, and not moving.
