How to use the chart (games that do the teaching)
- Arrow math. Point to any square and say a path: "down, down, right" from 23 lands on 44. Once that's easy, flip it: "how do you get from 36 to 67?" The answer — three downs and one right — is +10, +10, +10, +1, which is exactly how 2nd-grade mental addition works.
- Skip-count painting. Color every 2nd square, then every 5th on the same chart. The overlaps (10, 20, 30…) spark the first real conversation about common multiples — years before the word shows up.
- Race to 100. Take turns rolling a die and moving that many squares; first to 100 wins. Add a house rule — landing on a decade number earns a bonus roll — and suddenly they're scanning for tens on purpose.
- Mystery number. "I'm more than 40, less than 60, and I'm in the 5s column." Twenty questions, but every clue is number sense in disguise.
The mistakes that tell you what's really going on
- Stalling at every decade — counting "…28, 29…" then freezing before 30. That's not forgetfulness; the decade names (thirty, forty, fifty) are a separate list that hasn't linked to the pattern yet. The chart's rows make the handoff visible: end of a row, start the next.
- Finding "ten more" by counting ten ones. If 47 → 57 takes ten little hops instead of one drop down, the +10 move hasn't landed. Play arrow math until "down" is automatic — it's the single highest-leverage skill on this page.
- Falling apart after 100. A child who sails to 100 and then offers "one hundred, two hundred?" was riding the song, not the system. That's what the 120 chart is for — the rows past 100 follow the exact same rules, and seeing 109 → 110 in the grid settles it.
