How to use the line (the habits that do the teaching)
- Count the hops, not the ticks. From 2 to 5 is three hops, even though your finger touches four numbers. Kids who count ticks are the kids who are forever off by one — say "hops" out loud every time until it sticks.
- The jump strategy. For 47+30, don't crawl thirty little hops — make three big +10 jumps: 57, 67, 77. Then 47+34 is three big jumps and four small ones. This is the number-line version of the hundreds chart's "down a row is +10," and it's exactly how mental math works in 2nd grade.
- Make ten at the landing spots. On the 0–20 line, 8+5 becomes: hop 2 to land on 10, then hop the last 3. The bold fives and tens on our printables exist precisely to be landed on.
- Fractions are distances. Put the halves, fourths, and eighths lines one above the other and ask "what sits exactly under 1/2?" Finding 2/4 and 4/8 lined up vertically is understanding equivalent fractions — no pizza required.
- Tape one to the desk. Print the 0–20 line, tape it to the edge of your child's desk, and cover it with clear packing tape. It becomes a permanent homework tool — a portable manipulative that replaces counting on fingers.
- Play "cover the number." Cover a few numbers with your thumb and ask what's missing. It turns the line into a game and quietly builds number order and one-more/one-less fluency.
- Guess the secret number. Pick a number on the line and let your child guess; answer only "higher" or "lower." It's a two-minute game that teaches comparing numbers and the meaning of "between."
Number lines by grade: kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade
The same road grows with your child, so the right line depends on the grade:
- Kindergarten. Start with the 0–10 line for counting, number recognition, and one-more/one-less. Point to a number and hop forward one; that single hop is the whole idea of "add one."
- 1st grade. Move to the 0–20 line for addition and subtraction within 20. This is where "count the hops, not the ticks" and making ten at the landing spots (8 + 5 = hop 2 to 10, then hop 3) do the real teaching.
- 2nd grade. Use the 0–20 line for the jump strategy — adding tens in big +10 jumps — and bring in the negatives −10 to 10 line to preview integers. This mirrors the "down a row is +10" move on the hundreds chart.
- 3rd grade and up. The fraction number lines take over: halves, fourths, and eighths become distances, and stacking them turns equivalent fractions into something a child can simply see.

- Kindergarten – 1st grade (MA.1.NSO.1.1): Count the hops from 8 to 17. (This is also 17 − 8.) Answer: 9.
- 1st grade (MA.1.NSO.2.4): A frog is at 30 on the number line. It hops 6 spaces forward. Where does it land? Answer: 36.
- 2nd grade – jump strategy (MA.2.NSO.2.4): Start at 800 on a number line. Jump forward by 100, then by 50. Where do you land? Answer: 950.
- 2nd grade – placing numbers (MA.2.NSO.1.3): Where would you place 350 on a number line from 0 to 1000? Answer: between 300 and 400.
- 3rd grade – fractions as distance (MA.3.FR.2.2): On a number line, 1/2 and 2/4 land on the same point. They are what? Answer: equivalent.
- 3rd grade – comparing fractions (MA.3.FR.2.1): Plot 2/3 and 1/3 on a number line from 0 to 1. Which is farther from 0? Answer: 2/3.
The mistakes that tell you what's really going on
- Always off by one — answering 4 for "how far from 2 to 5?" That's tick-counting, not hop-counting. It looks like carelessness; it's actually a missing concept, and it quietly sabotages subtraction for years if nobody names it.
- Crawling instead of jumping. A child who solves 47+30 with thirty one-hops (or thirty fingers) hasn't linked "30" to "three tens." Hand them the open number line and require big jumps — it's the single highest-leverage drill on this page.
- Placing 1/8 to the right of 1/4 — because 8 is bigger than 4. Whole-number thinking applied to fractions. The fraction lines settle it in one look: more pieces means smaller hops.

Bend the number line into rows of ten and you get the hundreds chart — same road, folded into a map, with the +10 jump becoming "down one row." Name the positions by columns and you're doing place value.
